The Swedish final was held on March 31st at the Stadsteatern in Malmö, hosted by Harald Treutiger. The 10 songs were reduced to 5 finalists before the winner was chosen by 11 regional juries.

Carola previously represented Sweden at the 1983 ESC. She also came 2nd in the 1990 Swedish final and was a backing singer for Jahn Teigen in the 1990 Norwegian final. She went on to win ESC 1991.
