The Irish Final was held on February 8th at the RTE TV Studios in Dublin, hosted by Mike Murphy. The winning song was chosen by the votes of 8 regional juries.

Red Hurley previously came 2nd in the 1971 Irish Final. At the ESC he was 10th. The Swarbriggs represented Ireland in ESC 1975 where Mary Clifford was one of their backing singers.
