The National Song Contest 1971 was held on February 24 in the NOS studio in Hilversum. The presenter was Willy Dobbe, who previously hosted the Eurovision Song Contest a year. In this broadcast were only the songs presented . This time viewers and listeners could send postcards to choose their favorite. The winner was announced in a special broadcast on March 3.
Saskia & Serge sang six songs. Many saw this as an attempt to make NOS, after the disappointment in 1970 on the election of „Aquarius“ above „Het Spinnewiel“. With „Tijd“ they were allowed to Dublin, Ireland, where the sixteenth Eurovision Song Contest took place on April 3 at the Gaiety Theatre.
Saskia & Serge ended up in sixth place with 85 points
